What is Global Studies?

Global Studies programs give you the chance to study in another country or at a different university in the U.S. while earning credits that count toward your degree.

St. Kate’s partners with trusted organizations that offer programs in a wide range of locations and lengths, from just a few weeks to a full year.

The Global Studies office is here to help you every step of the way—from choosing a program that fits your interests and academic goals to supporting you through the application process and even after you return to campus.

Benefits of Global Studies

Engaging in a global studies experience is an opportunity to learn about a destination’s culture, landscapes, and language while earning college credits. The experience also provides the opportunity to learn about oneself in the context of a global community, often resulting in ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s developing a broader international perspective.

  • Academics
Students can study any topic from a different perspective and in a new environment while earning credits toward their major, minor, or liberal education requirements.
  • Language
Students have the opportunity to study a language more efficiently and accurately while being immersed in it abroad.
  • Intercultural Learning
Learning abroad strengthens ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s’ ability to interact with people from different cultures.
  • Personal Development
Students increase their self-confidence, maturity, and global identity.
  • Career Development
Time abroad enhances ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s’ resumés with international experience and allows them to expand attractive skill sets for future employers.

Getting Started

It's a great idea to get start planning your Global Studies experience early in your St. Kate's journey! Your first step is meeting with a Global Studies advisor, who can help you explore options, find the right destination, and talk through the finances. Together, you'll figure out what works best for your academic and personal goals.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you’ll need to be in good academic and disciplinary standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5. You must also have completed at least one semester at St. Kate’s to enroll in a short-term program, and two semesters for a semester-long or year-long program. All Global Studies courses must be taken for credit, and some programs may have additional prerequisites.

Financial Aid

A Global Studies program can be affordable. Most costs are set before departure, and ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s work closely with their advisor to plan and understand expenses. University financial aid typically applies, and federal aid can be used as long as the program earns credit accepted by the home institution.

Staying Safe

The Office of Global Studies provides a pre-departure orientation and shares safety resources with all ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s. Additionally, we monitor all program locations and have a comprehensive response plan in place to support ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s in the event of an emergency.
