Developing and Teaching a Global Studies Course

Teaching a term embedded course with a study abroad travel component is an excellent way to take an academic subject outside of a traditional classroom setting and connect it to the realities and experiences of the world. The vast majority of St. ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ University ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s studying abroad do so on short-term courses led by St. Kate’s faculty and staff.

All faculty must have course proposals approved by their department chair and by the Global Studies Advisory Committee. GSJ courses must also be approved by the CORE Committee.

Proposals deadlines run roughly a year and a half in advance, so expect to start planning 18-24 months before the intended start date of the course.

Although much work goes into developing and delivering a successful Global Studies course, we are pleased to collaborate and support you along the way. Contact the director of Global Studies to discuss your ideas for course development and the resources available to bring your course to life.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)/Virtual Exchange (VE)

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) / Virtual Exchange (VE) is a powerful form of global learning for both faculty and ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s. COIL typically involves the co-development of a course module by two or more instructors from different countries, each of whom recognize the value behind connecting ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s from across the world to learn and work together on a common area of focus. COIL projects are integrated into existing courses and offer ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s meaningful global engagement without needing to travel.

Methodology & Purpose:

COIL does not involve a set curriculum or delivery platform but is a flexible framework for developing courses, connecting institutions, faculty and ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s, and supporting institutional goals for ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ learning and engagement. COIL can help St. Kate colleges and departments facilitate interactions across socio-economic, geographic, and political boundaries, and achieve goals for delivering global learning and cross-cultural experiences to a larger number of ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s. It is an ideal and cost effective way to fulfill St. Kate’s mission to be respected globally for educating women who transform the world.
